Asia Cup 2023 in jeopardy for Pakistan as PCB and star players go eye-to-eye regarding contract issues

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the star Pakistan players have come eye-to-eye with each other just ahead of the two major international tournaments, Asia Cup 2023 and ODI World Cup 2023. The main issue behind this clash between the players and the board is the players neglecting on signing the central contract for the long term.

It all happened after the interested stakeholders and parties failed to close the deal on the sale of players’ licensed digital rights. “The players’ point of view is that other cricket boards either are not involved in the sale of players’ digital rights/NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) or have a proper agreement with them on the sharing of revenues from this avenue,” a PCB source was quoted as saying.

The players want a bigger share from the sale of their digital rights: PCB Source

“The PCB does give the players a share from their digital rights sales but the players feel it is not enough. Though the board had nearly doubled the monthly central contract retainers and increased the match fees, the players want a bigger share from the sale of their digital rights and even increased share from what the board earns from selling broadcasting rights,” the source added later.

Currently, Pakistan are all set to lock horns with Afghanistan in the three-match ODI series before the commencement of the Asia Cup 2023. The series will start on August 22 with the first ODI in Hambantota. Following that, the second and third ODI will be played on 24 and 26 August respectively, in Hambantota and Colombo, respectively.

Following the conclusion of the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, the Men in Green will take on Nepal in the inaugural encounter of the Asia Cup 2023 on Wednesday, the 30th of August. Both teams will play this match at the Multan Cricket Stadium in Multan. Babar Azam’s men will lock horns with the arch-rivals, India on the 2nd of September at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele.
