Mumbai’s emphatic victory over Tamil Nadu in the 2023–24 Ranji Trophy semifinal showcased a remarkable comeback led by their lower-order heroes. Facing an early setback after Tamil Nadu chose to bat and posted 146, Mumbai found themselves at 106 for seven. However, a stunning display of resilience unfolded at the BKC Ground.

Shardul Thakur, the seasoned Indian international, showcased his class with a counterattacking maiden First-Class century, steering Mumbai towards a substantial lead. The true heroics, however, came from the unlikely source of Tanush Kotian, batting at number 10.

Kotian’s unbeaten 89, combined with the historic partnership with Tushar Deshpande (88 runs for the 10th wicket), turned the game in Mumbai’s favour. This spectacular recovery propelled Mumbai to a commanding first-innings total of 378.

Shardul Thakur continued his dominance in the second innings, rattling Tamil Nadu’s top order with crucial wickets. Despite Baba Indrajith’s resistance, left-arm spinner Shams Mulani’s four-wicket haul ensured Mumbai’s firm grip on the game. The result marked Mumbai’s 17th victory over Tamil Nadu in Ranji Trophy history, underscoring their historical dominance in this fixture.

Mumbai is set to host the finals at Wankhede Stadium!

Mumbai’s victory secured their entry into the Ranji Trophy final for the record-extending 48th time. With a staggering 41 titles, Mumbai is undoubtedly one of the most successful teams in the tournament’s history. Their last triumph was in the 2015-16 season, and they were runners-up in the previous edition.

Finishing as table-toppers with 37 points in the group stage, Mumbai earned the right to host the final at their home venue, the iconic Wankhede Stadium. Regardless of the outcome in the Vidarbha-Madhya Pradesh semifinal, Mumbai is set to enjoy the advantage of playing in familiar conditions in the final scheduled for March 10–14.

As they seek their 42nd Ranji Trophy title, Mumbai’s remarkable semifinal victory has showcased their resilience and established them as formidable contenders in the upcoming final showdown.
