Viacom18-owned Jio Cinema had a blockbuster opening weekend for the ongoing Indian T20 League. The viewership has clocked 147 crore views in just three days after the start of the tournament. Jio Cinema claims, that this is higher than the digital viewership of the entire last season in 2022 which was streamed on Disney+ Hotstar.

In the opening match of the season between Gujarat and Chennai, Jio Cinema clocked a viewership of 1.6 crores. It is also noted that more than 2.5 crore users downloaded the JioCinema app in a single day.

“The number of video viewers for the first weekend alone on JioCinema eclipsed what was recorded across the entire last season of Indian T20 League on digital. This was also higher than the 20-20 World Cup in 2022,” JioCinema shared in a statement.

“Fans continued to lap up unique features like 4K feed, 12-language coverage, 16 unique feeds, hype mode, and Multicam setup, among others,” the company further stated.

‘Digital is targetable, addressable and interactive’ – CEO of Viacom18 Sports

Despite the initial glitches reported by several users, the average time spent per viewer per match touched 57 minutes, 60 per cent more than compared to last season’s first weekend on Hotstar.

“These numbers are exceptional and evidence of the digital revolution sweeping through the country. Digital is targetable, addressable and interactive. Unlike legacy services, measurement digital is based on the exact number of people who come in to watch and not based on subjective extrapolation from a small sample set,” said Anil Jayaraj, CEO of Viacom18 Sports as quoted by Business Today.

“What we witnessed through the opening weekend of Indian T20 League 2023 is a testimony of the faith viewers have shown in JioCinema’s offerings to make the league more accessible, affordable, and in unique first-time cricket broadcast languages,” Jayaraj added.

JioCinema is streaming the tournament free with multiple languages like English, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Bhojpuri, Punjabi, Odiya, Gujarati, and Kannada. The company also provides options for the users to enjoy the match from different camera angles according to their choice.
