Justin Langer lashes out at his former pupils, calls them ‘cowards’
Former Australia coach Justin Langer has lashed out at his pupils for not being ‘honest with him. The former opening batter served as the head coach from 2018 to 2022. He joined the team after his predecessor Darren Lehmann resigned post the ‘Sandpaper’ controversy. Under Langer, the team played the semis of the 2019 ODI World Cup title and retained the Ashes in England the same.
Late last year, the team won the ever-elusive 20-20 World Cup title and thrashed the Poms in the return Ashes. Meanwhile, in February this year, he was offered a short-term contract as his previous contract was expiring in June. However, the 52-year-old decided to resign from the job with four months left in his contract.
Meanwhile, months after this, the left-hander has claimed that everyone was nice to him to his face. The Western Australia player added that he came to know about the players being ‘unhappy’ with him from the media. He called his former pupils as ‘Cowards’
“Everyone was being nice to my face,” the former opening batsmen told News Corp.
“But I was reading about this stuff and half of it, I swear to God and on my kids’ lives, I could not believe that is what was making the papers. A lot of journalists use the word ‘source’. I would say, change that word to ‘coward’.
“Because what do you mean ‘a source says’? They’ve either got an axe to grind with someone and they won’t come and say it to your face, or they’re just leaking stuff for their own agenda. I hate that.”
Pat Cummins told me there is nothing brutal in his feedback: Justin Langer
The former Middlesex player added that he spoke to current Test and ODI skipper Pat Cummins. The former claims that Cummin had assured him about not having anything brutal in his feedback.
“I spoke to Pat Cummins. He said to me about five times, ‘This might be brutally honest’,” Langer recalled. “I said, ‘Pat, there is nothing brutal about your feedback. What is brutal is I’m hearing it behind my back through the media or through sources’.
“No one’s telling me. Tell me. People say that I’m very intense, but they’re mistaking intensity with honesty.”
