India’s off-spinner has been the lead spinner in the team for the ongoing 20-20 World Cup 2022 so far. In the five games he played, he has six wickets at averaging 21.33, an economy rate of 7.52, and a strike rate of 17. In the game against Zimbabwe, he looked like going wicketless at one stage and was getting smashed. However, he finished with 22/3 in his four overs.
Meanwhile, former India skipper Kapil Dev isn’t impressed by the two-time World Cup winner. The former has said that Ashwin’s bowling doesn’t give him enough confidence going into the semis. Dev stated that Ashwin didn’t get wickets instead the batters threw away their wickets. The 1983 World Cup-winning captain also spoke about Ashwin hiding his face after picking a wicket.
“Until now, Ashwin hasn’t given me the confidence. He picked up wickets today but it didn’t look as if he got them. In fact, batsmen iss tarah out huye ki unhe khud bhi 1-2 wickets lete huye sharam aa rahi thi (Some of the batsmen got out in a way that Ashwin himself couldn’t believe it). He was hiding his face. Picking up wickets obviously gives you that confidence but the Ashwin we know, we haven’t seen him show the same rhythm,” Kapil said on ABP News.
Indian team management will prefer Ravichandran Ashwin over Yuzvendra Chahal: Kapil Dev
On the other hand, the former all-rounder has maintained that Ashwin would be a preferred choice in the semis against England. However, Dev added that the 2007 winners can throw a surprise in the opposition camp by bringing in Yuzvendra Chahal.
“It depends on the team management. If they have the confidence on Ashwin, it’s good. He has played the entire tournament so he can adjust if need be. But if you want to surprise the opposition, they can always turn to the wrist-spinner (Chahal). Whoever wins the confidence of the management and captain, will play,” added Kapil.
The semifinal between India and England will be played on November 10 in Adelaide.
