Former India great Kapil Dev shared his views on the expansion of the T20 Leagues on the global cricket landscape. Recently, he was a guest of honour at the India Australia Strategic Alliance dinner. The program was for celebrating 75 years of Indian Independence.

However, Kapil Dev came up with a suggestion to save the existence of the longest format of the game. He insisted that the global T20 Leagues are expanding quickly. Therefore, it can be used to save the Test format.

“The Governing Body of Cricket has a bigger responsibility how to manage this game” – Kapil Dev

Speaking at that event, Kapil Dev said that the Governing boy of Cricket needs to take severe actions to manage the game. He said: “The Governing Body of Cricket has a bigger responsibility on how to manage this game. It’s going the way as football in Europe. They don’t play against each country. It is once in four years [during the World Cup]. Is this what we’re going to have, the World Cup and the rest of the time playing club [T20 franchise] cricket?”

He also added that all countries are looking to focus on club cricket by organizing their T20 Leagues. It will affect international cricket as countries will be involved in the World Cup only then. “In a similar way, will cricketers eventually be playing mainly the Indian T20 League or the Big Bash or something like that? So the Governing Body of the Cricket has to put more time into that to see how they can ensure the survival of one-day cricket, Test match cricket, not only club cricket.” Kapil Dev added.

“Club cricket is OK for a while. The Big Bash is OK. But the South African league is coming, the UAE league is coming. If all the countries are going to play club cricket, then international cricket will be only for the World Cup.” Kapil Dev concluded. However, Cricket Australia’s five-year strategy got introduced to highlight the impact of privatization and expanding T20 leagues on the global cricket landscape.
