‘Kya shuruaat hai Kiwiyon ki’ – Fans react to another dominant win for New Zealand in 2023 ODI World Cup, beat Netherlands by 99 runs

Back-to-back wins for New Zealand and they have made a huge statement in the 2023 ODI World Cup. A dominant nine-wicket win over the defending champions in the tournament opener followed by a crushing 99-run victory over the Netherlands. On the other hand, the underdog Dutch side have two defeats in two matches, but they have some positives to take from the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Monday, October 09.

After being put into bat first, the Dutch bowlers stunned Kiwi openers Devon Conway and Will Young with three maiden overs. Yes, the 2019 runners-up needed 19 deliveries to open their account, but they were in a commanding position after that. Young started the proceedings by scoring 15 runs in the fourth over against Aryan Dutt. Conway also joined the party with a six and a four off the right-arm spinner.

When Conway looked set to repeat his heroics in the last match, Roelof van der Merwe provided the breakthrough by dismissing the southpaw (23 off 40 balls) in the 13th over. However, the Netherlands could not capitalise from there as Young and Rachin Ravindra did some good striking. Unlike the last match, Ravindra’s batting looked completely different as he assumed the anchoring role.

The right-handed opener’s spot was in bother after his poor show against England in the first match. However, he did not let himself down, scoring a brilliant 59-ball half-century. Paul van Meekeren broke the dangerous partnership in the 27th over by getting rid of Young (70 off 80 balls). Ravindra too soon departed but the last-match centurion impressed once again with a well-disciplined half-century.

Captain Tom Latham’s 53 off 46 balls and Darryl Mitchell’s 48 off 47 balls led New Zealand’s scoring in the middle overs. They scored fifty runs in the last three overs, which certainly hurt the Netherlands. Aryan Dutt, van Meekeren and van der Merwe grabbed two wickets each for the Dutch side.

Mitchell Santner tore apart the Dutch batting unit

In reply to New Zealand’s competitive total, the Men in Orange did not have a great start as pacer Matt Henry drew first blood with the dismissal of Vikramjit Singh (12 off 20 balls) in the sixth over. Spinner Mitchell Santner sent back their other opener Max ODowd to the pavilion soon after the powerplay. Netherlands’ hero in their previous encounter, Bas de Leede also got a fine start but Trent Boult’s outstanding juggling catch on the boundary line sent him packing in the 17th over.

Colin Ackerman (69 off 73) and captain Scott Edwards (30 off 27) stitched a brief partnership, but Kiwi spinner Mitchell Santner grabbed the wicket of both to put the opposition in danger. The left-arm spinner nipped out Ackermann and Edwards in successive overs to dash the only remaining hopes of the Netherlands. Santner took five wickets – New Zealand’s first five-wicket haul in an ODI World Cup – and won the Player of the Match.
