KL Rahul’s stint as Lucknow captain started with a loss against fellow debutants Gujarat on March 28. Lucknow batted first after losing the toss and were tottering at 29/4, thanks to Mohammed Shami. However, the Men In Mint Green recovered from the early jolts, thanks to the half-centuries of Deepak Hooda (55) and Ayush Badoni (54). They posted 158/6, which was considered a fighting total for the bowlers.

Pacer Dushmantha Chameera proved it right with his two early wickets of Shubman Gill (0) and Vijay Shankar (4). The partnership of 57 runs between skipper Hardik Pandya (33) and Matthew Wade (30) provided much-needed stability to the innings. However, the duo got out in the 11th and 12th over respectively, bringing back the Lucknow team in the game. At this stage, David Miller (30) and Rahul Tewatia added 60 runs for the fifth wicket.

The partnership helped the team get closer to the target. At the score of 138 runs, Miller got out and was replaced by Abhinav Manohar at the crease. Manohar (15*) and Tewatia ensured that the team gets over the line with two balls to spare. After the game, Rahul praised the team efforts despite the loss.

“It was a phenomenal game. What a way to start the campaign. Starting off like that with the bat was not ideal but the way we recovered was phenomenal. It gives us so much confidence when the batters in the middle and lower order can do the job. We know with the Wankhede the ball can do a bit at the start and if we can get through that it will be ideal.

“We couldn’t have started the campaign in any better way. There is so much to take away and learn for us. Sometimes you gotta give it to the quality of the bowler,” Rahul added.

He then praised his team on Twitter which didn’t go down well with the netizens. They started trolling Rahul on Twitter for covering up for the loss.
