Napoli won the Scudetto on Thursday with a 1-1 draw at Udinese, capturing their first Italian Serie A championship in 33 years. Victor Osimhen, the top scorer in Serie A, equalised for Napoli in the 52nd minute, sparking wild celebrations throughout Naples, inside the stadium in Udine, and elsewhere. Napoli needed a draw to take an unassailable 16-point lead with five games left.

Napoli has won the championship three times in the top division of Italy, but this is their first since the renowned Argentinean player Diego Maradona guided them to victories in 1987 and 1990. Following his passing in November 2020, Maradona’s name was added to the home stadium of Napoli.

Luciano Spalletti, the head coach of Napoli, claimed that Maradona’s influence was “felt in this success.” “Napoli, this is for you,” he added. “There are people here who will be able to get through difficult moments in their lives because they remember this moment. These people deserve all the joy.”

The win trigged a street party at Naples

A late equalise by Salernitana prevented Napoli from clinching the title at home on Sunday, prolonging the wait by an additional four days. Even though their closest rivals, Lazio, had defeated Sassuolo the day before, they knew going into Thursday’s encounter that a point would be sufficient.

A capacity crowd of more than 50,000 people watched the play on jumbo screens at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples, in addition to the 11,000 Napoli supporters inside and the 5,000 more outside the stadium in northern Italy’s Udine.

When the final whistle blew in Udine, fans celebrating invaded the pitch, while fireworks and delirium were heard in Naples. According to a local official, seven people were hurt overnight in Naples as the southern Italian city erupted in celebration over the success of its football club. One guy died from gunshot wounds. Claudio Palomba, the prefect of Naples, said the shooting event had “nothing to do with the celebrations”, but a man had died from gunshot wounds.
