In the ongoing first ODI between India and New Zealand, the home side won the toss and elected to bat first. At the toss, India skipper Rohit Sharma said “looks a good pitch, little dry. It’s about making sure we bowl under the lights and try and defend scores like we did against SL. Everyone is pushing each other in the squad.”

The India skipper had a good start as he scored two fours and a six inside the first three overs of the innings. Sharma hit his second six of the game in the fifth over. After hitting two more fours and taking singles on occasion, he reached 34 runs and was looking set to get to a big score.

However, in the 13th over of the innings, Blair Tickner bowled a slower ball at the stumps at full length. Sharma failed to read the variation and tried to loft the shot over the mid-on fielder inside the circle. However, the two-time World Championship winner could only lob to the mid-on fielder Daryl Mitchell. With this, his wait for another ODI hundred continues.

Rohit Sharma-led India needs a big partnership

Talking about the game, the Men In Blue is in trouble as they lost three wickets for 109 runs. Former India skipper Virat Kohli started well but played badly against Mitchell Santner to lose his wicket. The former tried to play a fullish ball from the backfoot, resulting in him losing his stumps. A few overs later, Ishan Kishan failed to make his opportunity count as he was caught behind by Tom Latham off Lockie Ferguson.

Kishan could only score five runs. At the time of writing, the likes of in-form Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav batting at the crease. The former has scored his sixth fifty and is on course for his third ODI hundred. On the other hand, Yadav would love to make the opportunity count with big runs.
