Match number 11 of the ODI World Cup 2023 saw New Zealand register a thumping victory against the Bangladesh team by eight wickets. Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan was notably absent during the concluding stages of his team’s loss to New Zealand in the 2023 ODI World Cup at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday. The prominent all-rounder completed the last of his 10 overs before the 40th over and subsequently left the field for scans.

In his absence, Najmul Hossain Shanto assumed the captaincy role. Bangladesh faced their second consecutive defeat as the Blackcaps successfully chased down 246 runs in 42.5 overs, securing their position at the top of the table. The left-hand all-rounded grappled with cramps in the intense Chennai heat, a condition likely aggravated while attempting a single during the first innings.

The stand-in skipper Najmul Shanto said during the post-match presentation that the regular captain is going for his scans. He said, “We will know after that.”

Shakib Al Hasan entered the batting crease when Bangladesh was facing significant pressure, having been reduced to 56-4 in the 12th over. Alongside Mushfiqur Rahim, the only two players in the entire tournament participating in their fifth campaign, they resurrected Bangladesh’s innings. The Bangladesh skipper also contributed 40 runs off 51 deliveries before falling victim to a sharp bouncer from Lockie Ferguson in the 30th over. In terms of bowling, Shakib secured figures of 1-54, dismissing Devon Conway.

Kane Williamson also picked up an injury while batting

After being absent from New Zealand’s initial matches in the ongoing 2023 ODI World Cup, Kane Williamson made a comeback to the playing XI, taking over from Will Young as the captain. Leading the side, the skipper showcased his class in a challenging run chase, contributing 78 runs off 107 deliveries before being retired hurt as a precautionary measure.

The New Zealand skipper sustained a blow to his thumb from a stray throw while attempting a single, prompting immediate attention from the medical team, who applied a substantial bandage to the affected area. During the post-match presentation, Williamson confirmed his plan to undergo scans on Saturday. Presently, there are no further updates, and the extent of the injury will only be determined once the scan results are available.
