India is gearing up for three-match ODI series in Zimbabwe followed by the Asia Cup later this month. However, since the departure of Virat Kohli as captain, India has tried several options for Indian captaincy. Rohit Sharma has been the main captain across all three formats. But, his fitness issue has become a major concern. Even, KL Rahul, the vice-captain also missed many series due to injury.

However, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, and Rishabh Pant managed to impress with their leadership skills in recent times. Now, former Indian wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel came up with his preferred candidates for future India captaincy after Rohit Sharma. He said that these players’ captaincy skills are a work in progress.

“Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul have both been a ‘work in progress’ as captains.” – Parthiv Patel

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Parthiv Patel said that KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Hardik Pandya are the front runners. But, they need to work more on their abilities. He said: “Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul have both been a ‘work in progress’ as captains. With every passing game, their captaincy is improving and they, along with Hardik, are the three contenders I feel who will replace Rohit Sharma as India’s next captain,”

Patel also said that Jasprit Bumrah can be another candidate to replace Rohit Sharma in the coming days. He said: “Jasprit Bumrah made his debut for Gujarat under my captaincy. So I had the opportunity to interact with him a number of times about how he wanted to set up a batter to take his wicket. That spoke volumes about how intelligent he is in taking cricketing decisions.”

“Although India lost the Test under his captaincy, he definitely has the intelligence and credentials to be looked at as the future India captain,” Parthiv Patel added. Speaking of India’s schedule, their Zimbabwe tour will kick off on 18 August. Then, they will kick off their Asia Cup campaign on 28 August 2022. India will lock horns with their arch-rivals Pakistan in UAE.
