Pat Cummins reveals main facet in England’s side which they exploited during 1st Test of Ashes 2023
After starting day 5 on 107-3 and Australia needed 281 to win, play finally began, after the morning was washed out due to rain. When Ben Stokes’ team had the visitors, 227-8, wanting a further 54 runs to win, an incredible unbroken ninth wicket stand between Cummins and Lyon meant it to the Aussies.
England will head to Lord’s with a 1-0 down in the five-match series. With two wickets remaining and the visitors needing 54 runs, skipper Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon held on their nerves and get Australia through. Cummins remained undefeated on 44 runs, as Australia won a thriller chase at Edgbaston.
We realised they are a bowler short: Pat Cummins
Pat Cummins said, “We realised they are a bowler short when we saw James Anderson in the playing eleven. So we were always confident of chasing the target.” James Anderson wasn’t at his best, he only picked up one wicket in 38 overs, even though he should have had Khawaja in the first over of Australia’s chase. The ‘Three Lions’ will need to keep an eye on his fitness in the coming weeks.
The Aussie skipper said, “Don’t know which is better but makes for good entertainment. [Khawaja] Incredible composure, played his own method didn’t get caught up. Been class the last couple of years, to have someone like that in the middle for others to play around. Really happy for him. He had a good feel for the wicket, everyone else tried to play their little role. [Lyon] He’s huge, both innings. He’s played 120 Tests, he takes key wickets, he’s a superstar.”
England was “devastated,” in Stokes’ words, but without their innovative tactics, this game would have been a rain-ruined draw. Instead, it boiled over into a climax that had Australians glued to their television screens until well after 4 a.m., with the prospect of four more Tests to come. However, Anderson, convey his conviction that both teams’ supporters were fully delighted by the intense battle.
