Cricket is one of the world’s most popular sports, with more than 100 member countries – 12 Full Members and 92 Associate Members – participating under the Cricket Governing Body. However, in India, this bat and ball game has been considered a religion for years. The craze for cricket in India is always highly visible whenever the Man in Blue takes the field as their adoring fans flock to the stadiums to support the team and their favourite players.

When we take the list of countries with the most number of cricket grounds that have hosted an international match, India tops the list with 52 stadiums. England is second in this list with 23 stadiums. Meanwhile, in what can be termed big news for Indian cricket fans, the country is all set to receive another stadium on September 23 with modern facilities that can seat 30,000 people.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the state-of-the-art international cricket stadium in the Ganjari Area of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh this Saturday. The new stadium is reported to have a Lord Shiva theme and their designs are just beautiful. The dome of the stadium has been designed in the shape of Lord Shiva’s Trishul and the floodlights in the shape of the Damru instrument.

The entrance gate design is said to be like a Belpatra while the seating arrangements will be like the steps of Ganga Ghat. The name of the Varanasi stadium is yet to be revealed, but the cost is estimated to be around Rs 450 crore.

Divisional Commissioner Kaushal Raj Sharma stated, “Preparations at Ganjari are being started for the proposed visit of the Prime Minister to lay the foundation stone of the cricket stadium on September 23. It will be a grand show as apart from Indian Cricket Baord office-bearers, star cricketers are also likely to take part in the ceremony.”

Drawings of the stadium, designed by Larsen and Toubro (L&T), have been finalised. Once the UPCA (Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association) approves the project, they need to obtain a no-objection certificate from various departments.
