Rafael Nadal set to return for Brisbane International after being out of action for more than 11 months
Spaniard Rafael Nadal set to return for Brisbane International after being out of action for more than 11 months. The star player suffered a hip flexor during the second-round match of the Australian Open 2023 earlier this year, which ruled him out of the competition. The 37-year-old realized that the injury is a bit serious and understood the time he could be away from Tennis.
As it turned out, Nadal could not play for 10 months. The recovery of the injury has taken a longer time, as anticipated. In the period, Nadal pulled out of many major tournaments, including the Grand Slam events like the French Open, the Wimbledon Open, and the US Open. It took a lot of Tennis out of the 22-time Grand Slam champion, who aimed at winning as many tournaments as possible before he could retire.
Nadal took to his social media accounts and announced his comeback to Tennis. The Spaniard posted a video in which he posted the setback footage of getting injured in the Australian Open earlier this year. With this, he mentioned about his comeback. “After a year of not competing, it is time to come back. It will be in Brisbane in the first week of January. See you there,” said Rafa.
2024 – last competitive year of Nadal
In a career filled with different kinds of injuries, Nadal has always fought his way back to prove a lot of things. At one point in time, the Southpaw was the Tennis player with the greatest number of Grand Slam titles. For an injury prone player, it was a sensational feat indeed. Even now, Nadal has the second highest number of Grand Slam titles for a men’s singles player.
As every good thing must come to an end, so does Nadal’s career. The 37-year-old had announced earlier this year that 2024 would be his last calendar year in Tennis is a professional athlete. Nadal took the decision keeping in mind his repetitive injuries. “You never know how things will turn out, but my intention is that next year will be my last year,” said Nadal.
