India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has a different view on Rohit Sharma’s decision to withdraw the run-out appeal against Dasun Shanaka. The incident happened during the first ODI between India and Sri Lanka this week. In the dying moments of the game, Mohammed Shami ran out the Sri Lanka skipper as the latter was backing. However, India skipper Rohit Sharma withdrew the appeal.

After the game, he cited Shanaka batting on 98 and didn’t want him to get out like that. Meanwhile, Ashwin has a different view on the matter which isn’t surprising. In the 2019 Indian T20 League, the right-arm off-spinner ran out Jos Buttler. At that time, the two-time World Championship winner for India played for Punjab. Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu player says that it is the duty of the umpire to give a batter if he is out.

The 36-year-old also termed non-striker dismissal as taboo and said that it depends entirely on the bowler.

“See, even if one fielder appeals, it is the duty of the umpire to declare a player out if he is out. So, I find it very surprising to have so many taboos surrounding this mode of dismissal. But the entire dismissal is regarding what the bowler does, right? The right of making that dismissal or making that appeal or making that decision lies with the bowler, right,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

The Rajasthan player in the Indian T20 League further spoke about how batters walk off even when the umpire doesn’t give them out. At that time, the batters aren’t asked to think about the team’s interest and are lauded for the spirit of the game according to Ashwin.

“In so many games, a batter has nicked and walked without waiting for the umpire’s decision. At that time, the batting team captain won’t come and ask, ‘With whose permission did you walk like that? Did you forget the team’s cause? Go back and continue playing. These different treatments for bowlers and batters have been taking place for so many years now,” he added.
