Reports – Shreyas Iyer looking for leadership role, may leave Delhi Capitals before IPL 2022
India and Delhi Capitals (DC) batter Shreyas Iyer is likely to play for a new team in the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL). If report in Times of India is anything to go by, then the elegant right-hand batter is looking for a leadership role. Iyer has been one of the mainstays in the DC batting lineup since making his debut in 2015.
He was also handed the leadership role of the side in 2018 and he managed to ace at it too. Iyer took DC to their maiden final in the 2020 season.
During this year’s UAE leg of the IPL , the former DC captain played well and scored 175 runs in eight games. Iyer was all set to lead the team in the 2021 season but an untimely shoulder injury forced him to miss the first leg of IPL. Rishabh Pant was made the captain of the franchise and he grabbed his opportunities with both hands and took DC to the playoffs.
While DC management had said that Pant has been made the skipper on a temporary basis, given the fact that DC did so well under his leadership, there are murmurs that the franchise may name Pant as the permanent skipper of the side. This has prompted Iyer to look for an alternative team in case DC decides to stick with Pant as the skipper. Several teams the likes Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are looking for leadership options. Also with two new teams set to join, they might be interested in getting Iyer onboard.
The right-hand batter has so far scored 2375 runs in 87 matches at an average of 31.66 for Capitals. Iyer has enough leadership experience behind him, having led the Mumbai Ranji team along with Delhi Capitals.
