Rohit Sharma to take a break from cricket: Reports
Rohit Sharma has been the most successful captain in the history of the Indian T20 League. But the 15th edition of the tournament has been miserable for both the skipper and the batter, Rohit Sharma.
In Indian T20 League 2022, Mumbai managed to win just 4 out of their 10 matches and finished at the bottom of the points table. On the other hand, Rohit as a batter scored just 268 runs from the 14 matches in the tournament at an average of just 19.14 and a strike rate of 120.14. The man who is known for scoring big whenever he gets settled failed to score a single half-century throughout the tournament.
On the back of his dip in form, reports have gone ripe that Rohit has asked for a break(for the South Africa series) from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The reports from InsideSports also suggest that the BCCI has approved his request and relieved him of his duties for the South Africa series. Experts think that this rest is being given to Rohit Sharma so that he returns fresh for the all-important England tour.
Notably, it is also believed that Indian selectors will be looking to go with a two-squad approach. While one squad will be touring England, the other one will be playing the T20I series against South Africa and Ireland.
The reports say that ITL performers like Tilak Varma and Umran Malik will be given a break in the series versus South Africa. The team will probably be led by Shikhar Dhawan or Hardik Pandya, as both of them are expected to make a comeback to the national squad on the back of their brilliant performances in the Indian T20 League 2022.
India will be using the series against South Africa and Ireland to test some new faces for the T20 World Cup scheduled later this year in Australia. India will look to field a perfect squad with a balance of experience and youth.
