The fourth and final Test between India and Australia ended in a draw and with this, India have won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the fourth consecutive time. India have continued their dominance against the Aussies in the longest format as they clinched the four-match series by 2-1.
Irrespective of the result in Ahmedabad, both India and Australia have qualified for the final of the Test Championship and will again lock horns against each other at The Oval on June 7 for the big finale. Australia already booked their spot after winning in the Indore Test, while India have been able to secure their spot after New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka by 2 wickets in a thrilling encounter in Christchurch.
Coming to day five with 3 runs on board in the fourth inning, Australia lost their first wicket in the form of Matthew Kuhnemann who came as the night watchman on day four. Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed him for 6 runs. After that Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne put up a partnership of 139 runs. Head got out after scoring 90 runs 163 balls, while Labuschagne remained unbeaten on 63 runs from 213 deliveries. Skipper Steve Smith decided to shake to hands with the opposition team when Australia’s score was 175 for 2 in 78.1 overs.
Centuries from Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill helped India take the lead
India put up a total of 571 runs in their first inning in reply to Australia’s 480 runs. Virat Kohli was the main anchor of the Indian innings as he scored his 28th century in Tests. He scored 186 runs off 364 balls. Shubman Gill also got his second Test hundred as he got out after scoring 128 runs off 235 balls.
Axar Patel also continued his great form with the bat as he scored his third fifty in the series. He got out after scoring 79 runs off 113 balls. Axar also added 162 runs with Kohli for the sixth wicket.
For Australia in the first innings, Usman Khawaja scored 180 runs off 422 balls. While Cameron Green also got his maiden Test century as he got out after scoring 114 runs off 170 balls. Ashwin scalped 6 wickets in the first innings.
Kohli got awarded as the Player of the match for his splendid century, while the Indian spin duo Ravichandra Ashwin and Ravindra jointly got awarded as the Player of the series for their great bowling performance throughout the series.
Both India and Australia will now lock horns in a three-match ODI series starting on March 17. This series will be crucial for both sides as a preparation for the 50-over World Cup that will be hosted by India later this year.
