New Zealand once again witnessed a thrilling win in a Test match as they defeated Sri Lanka by two wickets, winning in the last ball of the final day of the first Test in Christchurch. The Kiwis also won their previous Test against England by just 1 run.

Now that New Zealand won the first Test of the two-match series against Sri Lanka, the second finalist of the Test championship after Australia has been decided as India will take on Australia in the final clash on 7–11 June at The Oval in London. India now have qualified for the final for the second consecutive time, and the result of the ongoing Ahmedabad Test against Australia would not affect India’s chances to qualify for the final.

The Kiwis came out to bat on day five as they were given the target of 285 runs by Sri Lanka. The hosts got the first shock after they lost the opener Devon Conway in the fifth over with 9 runs on the board. After that, the former skipper Kane Williamson took the charge and went on to score a magnificent century. Williamson also added 142 runs with Daryl Mitchell for the fourth wicket. Mitchell got out after 81 runs off 86 balls hitting three fours and four sixes.

Final over drama on day five

The match went down to the last over of the day with New Zealand requiring 8 runs from the six balls left. The game became more nail-biting after Matt Henry got run out in the third ball of the over, with New Zealand needing 5 runs more. In the very next delivery, Williamson found the perfect gap through point to hit the ball for boundary and level the scores and release the pressure for the hosts. Asitha Fernando bowled a dot delivery on the very next ball with the equation coming down to 1 run from one ball. The Blackcaps got the final run in the form of leg byes and registered one of the most thrilling wins in Test cricket with 2 wickets in hand.

New Zealand scored 285 runs for the loss of 8 wickets, with Williamson remaining unbeaten on 121 runs from 194 balls with 11 fours and a maximum. Daryl has been awarded Player as he scored a century (102 off 193) in the first innings and also played a crucial knock in the second innings for New Zealand.
