‘Sabse mushkil home series hogi’ – Fans react as England win by 28 runs against India to take 1-0 lead

The first match of the India vs England Test series was one of the most enthralling games over four days. On Day One, the visitors, England won the toss and elected to bat first. Their inning was a see-saw while playing with their famous method – Bazball. After starting with an opening partnership of 55 runs, the team lost three wickets for the next five runs.

The top three were back in the hut in no time. At this point, former captain Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow put together 61 runs. The partnership was broken by Axar Patel with the wicket of the latter. Ravindra Jadeja took out Root and the team needed something to get a respectable total. Skipper Ben Stokes (70) alongside the lower order helped the team reach 246 all-out in just 64.3 overs.

In reply, the home team had a great start as they finished Day One on 119/1 with Yashasvi Jaiswal hitting a quick fifty. On Day Two, he reached 80 before being caught and bowled by Root. KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja also got the 80s but failed to get their hundreds. The two-time World Test Championship finalists reached 436, leading by 190 at the end of the innings.

England beats India despite trailing by 190 runs

The Asian side never lost a Test at home after leading by more than 100 runs in the game. However, after being reduced to 165/5, the Three Lions made one of the greatest comebacks. First of all, Ben Foakes and Ollie Pope put together 112 runs for the sixth wicket. On Day Four, Pope and Tom Hartley put together 80 runs for the ninth wicket. After being bowled out for 420, they asked India to chase down 231.

In the fourth innings, India had a decent start but Hartley ensured that the team was reduced to 119/7. Despite this, Ashwin and Bharat ensured that the team remained in the chase but got out to the same bowler. The last batting pair of Bumrah and Bumrah took the team close but lost by 28 runs.
