Ireland faced West Indies in a crucial first-round game of the 20-20 World Cup 2022. The two teams were desperate for a win because the loser would be eliminated from contention. As it turns out, the underdogs, Ireland, dominated the game and registered a nine-wicket victory.

The Windies called it right at the toss and decided to bat first at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart. The Men in Maroon did not have a good start as they lost Kyle Mayers in the third over itself. Johnson Charles followed soon as Simi Singh picked his wicket in the fifth over of the innings.

After that, Brandon King helped to stabilise the innings, but he didn’t get much help from his teammates. Nicholas Pooran’s team struggled to get going and lost a few wickets in the middle overs. While King (62) completed his hard-fought half-century, Odean Smith scored a couple of sixes to help his team get to a total of 146/5 in their 20 overs.

For Ireland, spinners did the bulk of the working with the ball. Gareth Delany, with his three-wicket haul, was the pick of the bowlers. Simi Singh and Barry McCarthy also chipped in with one wicket each.

Paul Stirling and captain Andrew Balbirnie gave Ireland the perfect start in the chase. They two played with great intent and kept the boundaries in check. The pair added 73 runs in the partnership before Balbirnie (37) was dismissed by Akeal Hosein in the 8th over.

Lorcan Tucker joined Stirling at the crease, and the two continued to cruise along the chase. The opener regained his lost form and began scoring runs at a decent strike rate. He went on to score a half-century and finished with 66 runs. On the other hand, Tucker also scored well and remained unbeaten on 45 runs.

West Indies could not create any chances in the game, and the Irish won by nine wickets and 15 balls to spare. With this win, Ireland ensured a place in the Super 12 Stages, while they knocked the two-time champions out of the race.
