The former New Zealand bowler Simon Doull has been lending his voice in cricket matches for quite a few years now. He is currently commentating on the Indian T20 League matches. However, he has grabbed the attention of the cricketing world with a post on his official Twitter handle on Friday evening, the 13th of May. The post was the screenshot of online abuse hurled at him for his commentary by a random Twitter user with a fake account.

Doull captioned the post – “Hmmm. Should I accept or block? Can’t believe I still get work if I am so bad. Hope your amazing at your job whoever you are. Maybe come out from hiding behind a fake name and we can have a chat about our jobs.”

Simon Doull’s fellow commentator and colleague Harsha Bhogle took notice of the post and also reacted to it. He commented that it was quite unfortunate for educated people to behave like trolls, and he was certain that the family of the people would be ashamed of them if they knew about their behavior.

“I don’t normally react but some of the people abusing yesterday were doctors, MBAs, lawyers. Their families would have been ashamed of them if they had been called out,”- Bhogle’s Tweet read.

While the exact reason behind the abuse is still unknown, the viewers think that the general standard of commentary for this ITL season has been below par. The commentary team has often been criticized for not living up to the standards other broadcasters like Sky and Fox have set across the globe.

Doull himself was in the line of fire recently for being biased with Jimmy Neesham. Notably, the Kiwi all-rounder is a part of the Rajasthan squad for the ongoing season of the Indian T20 League. Doull’s opinion that Neesham should be given a nod ahead of Riyan Parag in the playing eleven did not go down well with the Netizens.

Many professionals have come out earlier and spoken about online abuse. While some think that the people in the industry should have thick skin, others have said that there should be consequences for being abusive on the internet.
