Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly is known for his straight talk and minces no words when he makes a point. The 51-year-old was recently speaking to channel Sports Tak when he was asked about the current Indian pace bowling unit.

Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj have been the hot topic of discussion. The trio have displayed great skills with the ball and made life difficult for the opposition batting unit.

The Indian cricket team will play its ninth and final group game on Sunday against the Netherlands. If India manages to win the game in Bengaluru they will go into the semi-finals as the only unbeaten side of the ODI World Cup 2023 tournament.

Sourav Ganguly compares 2023 bowling attack to class of 2003

It was under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly that the Indian pace bowlers started getting recognized. The 51-year-old was asked by Sports Tak how good the current set of fast bowlers are compared to the 2003 bowling trio.

Sourav Ganguly replied “Can’t say this is the best-ever Indian pace attack to date. In the 2003 World Cup, (Ashish) Nehra, Zaheer (Khan), and (Javagal) Srinath also bowled brilliantly,” The Indian team had reached the final of the 2003 World Cup under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly before losing to Australia.

The former Indian skipper though had huge words of praise for Bumrah, Shami, and Siraj. Sourav Ganguly said to Sports Tak “But yeah, it’s exciting to see Bumrah, Shami and Siraj bowl. It’s a big difference when you have Bumrah. There’s pressure from both ends as it is always about bowing in pairs. Bumrah makes a massive impact on the other two as well,”

Mohammed Shami had missed out early in the tournament for the first four games. Once he made his way into the playing XI, Mohammed Shami has bowled his heart out. The 33-year-old has picked 16 wickets with two fifers and one four-wicket haul during the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023.

When asked if Sourav Ganguly was surprised Shami hadn’t played earlier, Ganguly said “Yes, Shami should have played in the XI a lot earlier. Look at the impact he has made,” The Indian pacer has a good chance to move further up the wicket takers ladder on Sunday versus the Netherlands in Bengaluru.
