As cricket fans across the world were busy with the craze of the Indian T20 League, New Zealand and Sri Lanka delivered another stunning thriller in the 1st T20I at Eden Park in Auckland. The Sri Lankans finally registered their first win in the ongoing New Zealand tour after losing in Tests and ODIs. Sri Lanka took the lead of 1-0 in a three-match by winning the match in the super over.

New Zealand skipper Tom Latham won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first. Sri Lanka didn’t had a great start as they Pathum Nissanka on the very first ball of the match. Adam Milne’s swinging delivery found the edge of Nissanka’s bat and Latham didn’t make any mistake behind the wickets. After that, Kusal Mendis took the charge and got out after smashing 25 runs off just nine deliveries hitting three fours and two sixes. He also added 47 runs with Kusal Perera for the second.

After a couple of wickets, Perera and Charith Asalanka take the innings further and put up a partnership of 103 runs for the fourth wicket. Asalnaka got out after scoring 67 off 41 balls including two fours and six sixes, while Perera remained unbeaten on 53 off 45 balls hitting four fours and a maximum. Wanindu Hasaranga added the finishing touches to the innings as Sri Lanka posted 196 for the loss of 5 wickets. James Neesham scalped two wickets for the hosts, while Adam Milne, Benjamin Lister and Henry Shipley shared a wicket each.

Ish Sodhi’s last ball six took the match to the super over

The Kiwis had a disastrous start while chasing the winning total as they lost 2 wickets for just 3 runs inside two overs. After that, Tom Latham and Daryl Mitchell added 63 runs for the third wicket to put New Zealand back into the game. Latham got out after scoring 27 off 16 with five boundaries, while Mithcell scored 66 runs off 44 balls by hitting five fours and three sixes before he was dismissed by Dasun Shanaka in the 16th over. Mark Chapman also added 66 runs with Mitchell for the fourth wicket. The hosts kept losing wickets at regular intervals taking the match to the final over. When 7 runs were needed off the last ball, Ish Sodhi smashed a six and leveled the scores between both teams.

The match now went on to the super over. Maheesh Theekshana bowled the over for Sri Lanka and did a tremendous job as New Zealand 2 wickets in six balls scoring 8 runs. Adam Milne took the bowling charge for New Zealand and Kusal Mendis took a single on the first ball. After that, Charith Asalanka smashed a six followed by the four on the no-ball to finish the things off for the Lankans. The visitors finally had a winning laugh on the ongoing tour.
