Australian skipper Pat Cummins has flown back to Australia due to a family emergency. He is likely to return before the third Test vs India in Indore. Vice-captain Steve Smith is expected to lead the side if Cummins does not return on time. Smith previously also took over the role of captaincy in Cummins’ absence in a second Test of 2021-22 Ashes and a day-night Test against West Indies in Adelaide

Australia are already down by 0-2 in the ongoing four-match Test series against India as they lost the first Test by an inning and 132 runs, and got defeated in the second Test in Delhi by 6 wickets.

Australia also have a fast-bowling backup with Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood who are expected to fit before the third Test. Meanwhile, Lance Morris and Scott Boland are also part of the squad. The Australian skipper hinted that there could be changes in the playing XI for Australia to find a way back in the series.

Changes expected in Australian playing XI for remaining two Test

David Warner’s fitness will be monitored after he suffered an airline fracture in left elbow while batting in the first innings of the Delhi Test. Todd Murphy is also fighting with side soreness. The off-spinner still bowled 24.4 overs in the second innings and 6.4 over in the fourth innings of the Delhi Test.

Cummins has also been appointed as the captain of the ODI squad for a three-match series against India starting on March 17. He will now lead the side after Aaron Finch retired from all forms of cricket.

India have dominated Australis in the ongoing Test series so far. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have been a nightmare for the visitors as the spine duo has together picked up 32 wickets so far in the Test series
