India won their second game of the ODI World Cup 2023 as they swept aside the Afghanistan challenge. Rohit Sharma scored his first century of this tournament and seventh overall to power India to an easy eight-wicket win.

Shardul Thakur came into the Indian team as Ravichandran Ashwin was rested for the game. This created lots of discussions and debates with Sunil Gavaskar in particular not being happy. Hasmatullah Shahidi won the toss for his team and chose to bat first on a hot day in New Delhi. In the end, it was an easy win for India as they achieved the target in the 35th over to secure two more points.

Afghanistan is no match for India and Rohit Sharma –

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran started well as the pair added 32 runs for the opening wicket. Jasprit Bumrah then got the wicket of Zadran caught by KL Rahul, this was followed by Gurbaz falling to Hardik Pandya. Shardul Thakur took an intelligent catch to dismiss Gurbaz struck when he got the third wicket of the Afghanistan innings.

Shahidi and Azmat then came to the fore to add 121 runs as the 4th wicket pair frustrated the Indian bowlers. The stand was broken when Hardik Pandya went through the defences of Azmatullah to get India a vital wicket.

Afghanistan ended with 272 on the board after losing eight wickets as Bumrah took four wickets. The Indian bowling looked patchy with Siraj going wicketless once again in his 9 overs for 76 runs.

Chasing 273 to win, the Indian openers saw out the first three overs but then Rohit Sharma broke the shackles. The Indian skipper scored his 31st ODI ton as he went after the opposition bowlers. The game was killed off in the first overs when India was 94/0 with Rohit well past his half-century mark.

Rashid Khan was the sole wicket-taker for the Afghans as he got Ishan Kishan out for 47 and Rohit Sharma for 131. Virat Kohli continued his good form with the bat to stay unbeaten on 55 as India won the game easily. Shreyas Iyer kept vigil to score 25 not out including a 101-meter six. The winning hit came in the form of a four from Kohli as India won with 90 balls left to play.
