On 8 September 2022, India took on Afghanistan in Dubai in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022. Speaking about the form of these teams, India was coming off two defeats. They lost against both Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the ‘Super Four’. On the other hand, Afghanistan also lost both matches in the same round against those same teams. 

Thus, India and Afghanistan failed to qualify for the final of this ongoing tournament. Hence, India locked horns with Afghanistan in the dead rubber. Both the teams were looking to end this tournament with a win ahead of the 20-20 World Cup later this year.

Virat Kohli scored his first T20I ton (122* runs off 61 balls) against Afghanistan in Asia Cup 2022

Speaking of the match, Rohit Sharma took a rest from this match. Hence, KL Rahul came out for the toss. He also confirmed that Hardik Pandya and Yuzvendra Chahal also took a rest from the match. Therefore, India made three changes in their last playing XI against Sri Lanka. Afghanistan skipper Nabi won the toss. He elected to bowl first. In the absence of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli came out to open the innings.

Both started brilliantly as India reached 100 runs in 11.2 overs without losing any wickets. KL Rahul scored 62 runs off 41 balls before losing his wicket. But, Virat Kohli continued his good form in this tournament. He looked in sublime form as he played some fantastic shots against Afghan bowlers. Since 2019, he failed to score a hundred for India across any format. But, today, he finished that wait with a style. He remained not out on 122* runs off 61 balls. Virat scored his first-ever T20I ton. After this inning, he has now scored 71 centuries for India across all the formats. India scored 212 runs by losing two wickets only in two overs. Fans went over the moon after seeing Kohli scoring that fantastic ton.
