The defending champions of the Indian T20 League are having a terrible time in the 15th edition of the tournament. They have lost six of the nine matches in the tournament and their chances to make it to the playoffs are on the knife’s edge.

Notably, the man who has led them in all the editions of the tournament earlier, MS Dhoni stepped down from the role of captaincy ahead of the 2022 ITL. He handed over the responsibilities to the star all-rounder of the team Ravindra Jadeja. Chennai played eight matches under the leadership of Jadeja and lost six of them in the tournament.

Just ahead of the match against Hyderabad, Chennai revealed that Jadeja has decided to relinquish captaincy and hand over the duties back to MS Dhoni. MSD returned to the role and with that, the men in yellow also returned to winning ways with an emphatic victory over Hyderabad.

The statement of the Hyderabad match for the Chennai team management that confirmed the development read- “Ravindra Jadeja has decided to relinquish the captaincy to focus and concentrate more on his game.

MS Dhoni has accepted to lead CSK in the larger interest and to allow Jadeja to focus on his game.”

Later the CEO of the franchise Kashi Vishwanathan also confirmed that the decision was taken as per Jadeja’s wish. “This is a decision taken by the team management and Jaddu, a decision which we have now published in the press. Team officials didn’t have a say in this, only the management. Jaddu expressed his desire to relinquish captaincy and give it back to MSD, who is taking up the responsibility in the larger interest of the franchise,”- Vishwanathan revealed in a conversation with The Sunday Express.

However, as per recent reports Jadeja was forced to give up captaincy. To go by a report published on Cricbuzz, a Chennai insider revealed that the management was not happy with the fact that the responsibilities were affecting the all-rounder’s performances.

“The management cannot be silent that the world’s best all-rounder is not performing to his best. Obviously, he is weighed down by the burden of captaincy,”- the insider said.

However, all said and done the decision turned out in the team’s favor. Chennai returned to winning ways and Jadeja also performed decently with the ball in hand. The team will hope that the winning momentum continues for them.
