‘There was an incident with Warner in RCB game…’ Simon Doull’s bold statement on Prithvi Shaw amidst his poor form in IPL 2023
Ricky Ponting, the head coach of the Delhi Capitals, has nothing but respect for Prithvi Shaw going into the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The teenager had an incredible domestic season across all formats, including the record triple century in the Ranji Trophy. However, the ongoing season for the opener has been a nightmare, and for the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, he was totally taken from the lineup. Simon Doull, a former New Zealand cricketer, criticized Shaw for his bad season and lack of fitness, but he didn’t seem shocked at all.
Shaw has only scored 47 runs on 40 balls he has played in six innings, with the highest score of 15 runs. Shaw’s struggles in the tournament continued despite the support he received from the Delhi Capitals squad, and in the final three games, he was deployed as an impact player option.
If things aren’t working you have to change it up and he has to understand where he is at in his game: Simon Doull
But on Monday, DC management made their ultimate decision about Shaw, benching him for the game against SRH in Hyderabad. “We know he is a very good player and he will be working to get back into the team. He is hungry and determined to get back and I have full confidence that he can do it,” DC skipper, David Warner said after winning the toss and elected to bat first.
In an interview with Cricbuzz, Doull stated that he was not at all surprised by the call since he believed Shaw suffered for his inefficiency and poor performance. The former cricketer used DC’s game against RCB last week, in which Shaw had refused Warner for a single, to explain his argument. Despite Shaw sitting on the sidelines the entire time the squad was fielding, according to Doull, he was slow in his running between the wickets.
“You can’t continue down the same road. If things aren’t working you have to change it up and he has to understand where he is at in his game. And right now, it’s just not good enough. There was an incident with the run-out situation in Bangalore with Warner. He sat on the backside of the bench the whole time when Delhi were fielding and did nothing and later when he came out he was lazy with the running. These little things in the game matter and it comes back to haunt you at times. He has had a poor season and I don’t think he is fit at all and has neither adjusted his game as such. He has paid the price,” Doull was quoted as saying on Cricbuzz.

[…] Warner has struggled to score runs in recent duties, making just 26 runs across three Test innings during his most recent trip of India before heading home injured. Warner’s only notable performance in recent assignments is a superb double century versus South Africa last December. Additionally, he had a miserable Ashes series, returning with a 9.50 average, the worst mark ever for an opener who played in 10 innings when England’s quick Broad dominated the Australian opener.
