‘There’s been some really significant improvement..’ – Delhi Capitals skipper Meg Lanning shares her views ahead of WPL second season
Seven-time World Cup winner Australian cricketer and Delhi Capitals’ (DC) skipper Meg Lanning thought Women’s Premier League will be the next big thing in women’s cricket in India. It’s only the second season but Lanning thinks it will get bigger every year after showing the craze of the fans. Lanning is looking very excited and confident before the start of the first match against Mumbai Indians (MI) Women in Bengaluru.
Both teams, DC and MI were the finalists of the last season. Harmanpreet Kaur and co-won the inaugural season on WPL by 7 wickets against Delhi Capitals. It will be a rematch of last year’s finale in Bengaluru on Friday. Meg Lanning has played franchise leagues all over the world and she felt after watching the first season, WPL will grow more in upcoming years.
“There’s been some really significant improvement in the local Indian players from what I’ve seen so far. I think WPL has played a big role in that among other factors,” Lanning said before the first match in the second season. Fans expect a lot from youngsters like Shreyanka Patil, Prashavi Chopra, and Titas Sadhu in this year’s WPL.
Meg Lanning felt more optimistic about this year’s preparation ahead of the second season
“Our preparation has been great. We’ve had a little bit more time this year to get together as a squad and there’s been some camps as well. We have had some match simulation as well to allow people out in the middle to get a little bit of a feel for what their role might be. It’s been a really smooth transition into the squad, and everybody is really pumped to be able to kick off the tournament tomorrow (Friday) against Mumbai, which will be a great challenge,” Lanning said before the first match.
Lanning is apparently very happy for Annabel Sutherland in the team. Sutherland Has scored a Test double ton recently against South Africa.
Including Sutherland will be a big advantage for Delhi Capitals this year. “She’s really matured on and off the field in the past 12 months to become a really important part of any team that she plays in. But for us, she brings some real power with the bat and she can play multiple roles for us depending on game situation. But I think one of the biggest improvements in her game has been bowling and her ability to execute under pressure in the backend of the T20 innings when it can be difficult as batters are going pretty hard. She (has) got a real understanding of what works and what does not work.” Capitals skipper said this on Thursday
