Kolkata batted first in the match. Skipper Gautam Gambhir played a captain’s knock, scoring 62 runs off 43 deliveries. On the back of Gambhir’s knock, Kolkata finished with a total of 158 runs.
Chennai got off to a great start while chasing the target. The openers, Michael Hussey (56 off 39) and Murali Vijay (36 of 25) put up an opening stand of 97 runs. However, they lost two quick wickets at the same score after which Chennai lost its way. The match went down to the wire with Chennai requiring nine runs of the last over. Gambhir entrusted the duty to Rajat Bhatia. In the first five balls of the over, Bhatia conceded just 4 runs and also dismissed the dangerous MS Dhoni. Chennai now needed 5 runs of the last delivery. Dwayne Bravo hit a full toss from Bhatia in the air which crossed the boundary and resulted in a six. Chennai thus won a thrilling last-ball encounter.
