3. Play Steve Smith at all costs

In the game against the Blackcaps, the Aussies chose to go with a lot of hitters in the middle order. This can work when the opening batters provide a good start in the powerplay. During the game, the home team played much more dot balls during the powerplay than NZ’s entire innings.

Someone like Steve Smith can rotate the strike even if he can’t hit boundaries. This will help ease the pressure on the batter at the other end. The former captain can keep the scoring rate going with singles and double in the middle overs.
