The 41st match of the Indian T20 League 2022 took place at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The teams facing off in the contest were Delhi and Kolkata. It was an even contest between the bat and the ball that the fans witnessed.

Rishabh Pant won the toss and decided that Kolkata will bat first in the match. Kolkata had a weak start to their innings as they lost Aaron Finch (3 off 7) in the second over of the innings. They lost one more wicket in Venkatesh Iyer (6 off 12) within the powerplays and were down to 22 for two within 4.3 overs. Shreyas Iyer and Baba Indrajith in an attempt to stabilize the inning got stuck in the middle as the scorecard become stagnant. The duo just added 13 runs from 17 deliveries before Indrajith (6 off 8) was dismissed in the eighth over by Kuldeep Yadav. The left-arm spinner followed it up with the wicket of Sunil Narine (0 of 1) of the very next ball and Kolkata was reduced to 35 for four in 7.3 overs.

The innings got a bit of stability and the much-required momentum on the back of a 48 runs partnership between Shreyas Iyer and Nitish Rana. Shreyas scored 42 of 37 before he was dismissed in the 14th over by Kuldeep. Once again one wicket was followed by other as Andre Russell (0 off 3) followed in the same over. Nitish Rana (57 off 34) however kept going strong and held the innings together for the men in purple. Rana along with Rinku Singh (23 off 16) stitched a partnership of 62 runs before he was dismissed in the final over. Kolkata ultimately finished with a moderate total of 146 runs in their 20 overs. Kuldeep Yadav again weaved his magic and picked up four wickets conceding just 14 runs from his three overs. Mustafizur Rahman was the second most successful bowler for Delhi with three wickets to his name.

Delhi’s pursuit of the moderate target began in the worst way possible as Prithvi Shaw was dismissed on the very first ball of the innings by Umesh Yadav. His wicket was soon followed by that of Mitchell Marsh (13 off 7) in the second over of the innings. David Warner, however, looked in good touch and he along with Lalit Yadav stabilized the ship for Delhi with a partnership of 65 runs. Warner was the third wicket to fall for Delhi in the 1oth over. He played a brilliant knock of 42 runs from 26 deliveries and put Delhi in a comfortable position. But Warner’s departure was followed by another two quick wickets. Rishabh Pant (2 off 5 ) and Lalit Yadav (22 off 29)  departed of two successive balls and Delhi was 84 for 5 down in the 12th over. The match suddenly changed complexion and was hanging in the balance.

Axar Patel started batting steadily and taking Delhi towards the target. He played a very useful knock of 24 runs off 17 balls and was looking all settled in the middle. Just when it looked like Delhi will reach the target comfortably, Axar and Rovman Powell misjudged a couple and the left-hander was run out. This left Delhi at 113 for 6 after 15 overs and required 34 off the last five overs. Although the equation looked easy, the number of wickets in hand for Delhi was the prime concern. But Powell released the pressure slamming a six and a four of the 17th over from Venkatesh Iyer and picking up 14 runs of it. Powell (33 off 16) stayed there till the end and took Delhi to a win by four wickets with six balls remaining in the match. This was the fourth win for Delhi in eight matches, while Kolkata lost their sixth in nine matches.
