On 8 August 2022, the stage was set for PV Sindhu to win her first-ever gold medal in the women’s singles. On 7 August 2022, she qualified for the finals and ensured a medal for her country. However, high hopes were on her giving to her recent performances on big stages. Meanwhile, her opponent was Michelle Li of Canada.
She was the gold medalist in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the women’s singles. Hence, a fascinating contest was waiting for them and for the fans. Speaking about the head-to-head ratio, PV Sindhu was leading with a margin of 8-2 over her in all competitions. However, it was her chance to win her first-ever gold medal in the badminton women’s singles in the history of the Commonwealth Games.
PV Sindhu defeated Michelle Li 21-15, 21-13 in the badminton women’s singles final at CWG 2022
Speaking about the match, the whole crowd was behind PV Sindhu. It also helped her to start the match aggressively. However, the Canadian put up a fight as she won some back-to-back points. However, Sindhu was all over her after racing the double-digit. She won six straight points to make 15-8. Michelle tried her best to make a comeback. But, Sindhu won the first game 21-15.
In the second game also, Michelle tried some strategic changes. But, it did not go as per her plan at all. Sindhu once again won five back-to-back points and went into the break with a comfortable 11-6 lead. Then, Sindhu did not give a chance to Michelle to make a comeback. Finally, she won the game 21-13. With this win, she completed a full set of CWG individual medals. After winning the bronze medal in CWG 2014 and the silver medal in CWG 2018, Sindhu finally managed to better her medal colours in this year’s mega event.
