According to reports, 288 people died as a result of the tragic collision involving three trains in Odisha. The tragic event happened close to the historic Bahanaga Baazar station located in the Balasore district, located around 170 kilometres north of Bhubaneswar and 250 kilometres south of Kolkata.

The accident reportedly occurred at about 7 o’clock in the evening. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi reportedly was on his way to the scene of the accident after he got to know about this tragic news in Odisha. Ashwini Vaishnaw, the minister of railways, is already on the scene of the disaster. The Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, a cargo train, and the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express collided.

Virat Kohli’s message for the victims

Virat Kohli, the Indian cricketer, tweeted about the tragic incident and expressed his condolences to the households of the victims of the deadly train disaster. “Saddened to hear about the tragic train accident in Odisha. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families who lost their loved ones and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.”

With 1000 passengers, the 12864 Sir M Visvesvaraya (Bengaluru)-Howrah Express Superfast Express set off in the direction of Howrah. 200 stranded passengers are being transported from Balasore towards Howrah by a special train. The Southern Eastern Railway said in a statement which read. “As per the information received till now, there are 238 casualties. Around 650 injured passengers have been taken to the Hospitals of Gopalpur, Khantapara, Balasore, Bhadrak and Soro. Water, tea and food packets are being provided to passengers at Kharagpur station. Food packets will also be provided in Howrah after the arrival of the train.”

On the way to Howrah, several carriages from the 12864 Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express derailed and collapsed on nearby rails. The coaches that had derailed were struck by the 12841 Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express as it approached from the opposite direction on a parallel track. A total of 12 coaches from the Coromandel Express derailed, striking the halted goods trains on the third track.
