Chhetri has played a record 125 matches for India and has scored 74 times in those matches. He is the fourth-highest goal scorer in the world among active players in the international arena. With his remarkable on-field antics and off-field reputation, Chhetri has been the poster boy of Indian football in the post-Bhaichung era.

Chhetri has translated his international success into the domestic circuit also. He was the highest goal scorer in the 2017 edition of the I-league and has performed with the same intensity since moving to the Indian Super League in 2015.

He was also a part of foreign clubs. Notably, Chhetri was the third Indian subcontinent player to achieve the feat. In 2010, he was a part of the Kansas City squad but never got to play for them. Later he played a few matches for the Sporting CP’s reserve team, a Portuguese club.
