Watch: Mumbai Indians celebrate qualification into Play-offs in hotel room after RCB’s elimination
On Sunday, May 21, five-time winners Mumbai Indians celebrated lavishly after they had officially advanced for the IPL 2023 playoffs. At the Wankhede stadium earlier in the day game, they defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad with eight wickets in a do-or-die game for their side. Mumbai’s place in the playoffs, however, wasn’t officially announced until Gujarat Titans, the current table-toppers and defending champions, defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore with six wickets in hand. Virat Kohli’s century helped RCB reach 197-5 as a result but Shubman Gill’s 104* innings helped his side to their 10th win of the season
The MI players, who had their eyes fixed on their TV screens, began to rejoice as Gill struck the game-winning six, which helped GT win and complete straight IPL hundreds. The team’s handle along with Twitter followers afterwards uploaded a portion of the behind-the-scenes footage that Vishnu Vinod shared as his Instagram story.

Mumbai finished fourth overall in the standings with 16 points after 14 games. GT, meanwhile, finished first in the table with 20 points following winning 10 of its 14 games. With 17 points each, Chennai Super Kings as well as Lucknow Super Giants qualified. The Super Kings came in second thanks to a little higher net run rate.
The third-placed Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and the Mumbai Indians will now square off in the Eliminator on Wednesday, May 24 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The previous champions will try to exact revenge for their five-wicket setback to the Super Giants during the group stage previously this year. Mumbai will advance to Qualifier 2 if they win.
At the M.A. Chidambaram stadium on Tuesday (May 23), GT will square off against the four-time winners CSK in Qualifier 1. The victor will automatically secure a spot in the IPL 2023 championship game. The unsuccessful team advances to Qualifier 2 to face the winner of the game between Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians. The final and Qualifier 2 will both be held in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on May 26 and 28, respectively.
