Young India cricketer Prithvi Shaw’s debut for Northamptonshire in the England Domestic One-Day Cup 2023 ended on a bad note as the right-hander got hit-wicket for 34. Shaw failed to make solid contact with the ball while attempting a pull shot off a shot delivery in the second innings of the Group B match against Gloucestershire.

Chasing 279 in 50 overs, Shaw and Emilio Gay opened the innings for Northamptonshire but the partnership did not last long as the latter got dismissed for just 2 runs in the third over. Northamptonshire continued to lose wickets but Shaw and Lewis McManus tried to form a partnership. The opener looked in good touch but had to depart in a bizarre fashion after scoring 34 off 35 balls.

In the last ball of the 16th over, Paul van Meekeren delivered a short ball to Shaw, who tried to smash it with a pull shot. However, the 23-year-old failed to keep his balance and kicked his stumps while going down the ground. His departure put Northamptonshire in more trouble, as the scoreboard read 54/6.

Northamptonshire, meanwhile, did not give up as McManus and Tom Taylor played brilliantly to pull them back on track. McManus scored a 65-ball 54, while Taylor smashed 112 runs off just 88 deliveries. However, Gloucestershire bowlers pulled things back at the right moment and secured a 23-win. Earlier, Gv Buuren (108 off 102 balls) Anwar Ali (61 off 56) played superbly for Gloucestershire to put a competitive total on the board.

It’s going to be amazing I think: Shaw ahead of his journey with Northamptonshire

Shah was consistently overlooked by the Indian selectors as he was last named in the Indian squad for the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka in 2021. He had a poor outing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 and was dropped in the half-stage of the tournament.

Ahead of his county stint, Shaw said it was a great opportunity for him to express himself and thanked Northamptonshire for the opportunity.“It’s a great opportunity for me and I’m really thankful to Northamptonshire for giving me this chance to express myself here. It’s going to be amazing I think and I’m really looking forward to it,” Shaw was quoted as saying in a media release.
