In the second semi-final of the 2023 World Cup in Kolkata, the Proteas’ captain Temba Bavuma, won the toss and chose to bat, but the decision appeared to have adverse effects as South Africa faced challenges against the formidable Australian bowling attack. With top-order batsmen Bavuma, Quinton de Kock, and Aiden Markram struggling, South Africa found themselves in a difficult situation at 24/4 in the 12th over. But somehow recovered and posted a fighting total. The South African bowling as well as fielding had to be top-notch if they wanted to defend this modest total. Similar energy could be felt when the Proteas came out to defend the total.

In the eighth over of the match, Rassie van der Dussen executed a full-length dive to secure the catch, surprising the batsman, Mitchell Marsh. Marsh attempted to take on Kagiso Rabada but suffered the consequences, failing to score despite facing six deliveries. Rassie van der Dussen took an outstanding catch to dismiss the in-form Mitchell Marsh.

David Miller Century helped South Africa post 212

In the World Cup 2023 second semi-final, South Africa faced an early collapse against Australia after opting to bat. With top-order batsmen Bavuma, de Kock, and Markram dismissed early, the Proteas were struggling at 24/4. However, David Miller emerged as the saviour, playing a historic inning of 101 off 116 balls—the first century by a South African in a World Cup knockout match. Miller, along with partnerships from Klaasen and Coetzee, helped stabilize the innings.

Klaasen’s aggressive batting, including consecutive sixes, provided crucial support, and Coetzee, despite being lower down the order, contributed to the rebuilding process. Despite their efforts, Australia’s bowlers maintained pressure, and South Africa was eventually bowled out for 212.

In response, Australia had a strong start with Warner and Head putting on 60 runs in the first six overs. However, Markram’s dismissal brought South Africa back into the contest. Mitchell Marsh, coming in after his 177 not out against Bangladesh, had a slow start. In an attempt to accelerate, he tried to hit to the covers, but Rassie van der Dussen’s stunning catch got the second wicket for South Africa. Despite Miller’s heroic century, Australia’s bowlers and Warner’s quick start put them in a strong position in the semi-final clash.
