Watch: Team India’s celebrations after reaching the maiden Thomas Cup final
The Thomas Cup is an international badminton competition among the members of the Badminton World Federation. Notably, India being a member of the BWF is a participating team in the tournament but has never won the title. They have not even played the finals of the tournament in its 73 years of history.
However, the Indian men’s badminton team scripted a historical win in the semi-finals of the Thomas Cup 2022. The Indian team won against Denmark by a margin of 3-2. Kidambi Srikanth, Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, and HS Prannoy won their respective clashes to win the fixture for India.
The whole Indian contingent was brimming with emotions as they started celebrating around the court when Prannoy was leading the last match of the fixture by a 20-12 margin. As Prannoy won the last point and ensured India’s victory everybody ran out into the court and started embracing each other. This also ensured that India will play their first finals in the Thomas Cup.

The joys of the team knew no bounds as the celebrations continued in the post-match interview. HS Prannoy was heard speaking about his match in the interview. He was talking about the injury that he was carrying in the match. “Mentally, there were a lot of things going on in my head. After the slip, it was hurting more than usual and I was not able to lunge properly and I was thinking what to do.”

“In my mind, it was always coming that I should not give up, just try and see how it goes. Was praying that the pain doesn’t get aggravated and it started to reduce towards the second game and by the third, I was feeling much better,”- he added.
“The tactics which we used in the second and third game was very crucial. The strategy was to keep the pressure on and I knew if I come into the second half with a good lead, there is a big chance to get the game. And I just told myself to push these 11 points possible and the strategy worked,”-Prannoy concluded.
