Tim Southee has taken his second hat-trick in the ongoing second T20I against India in Mount Maunganui. In the last over of India’s innings, he took the wickets of stand-in skipper Hardik Pandya, Deepak Hooda, and Washinton Sundar. Pandya was caught at long-on while Hooda tried to whip the ball on the leg stump but was caught by a short fine fielder.

Sundar tried to score as many runs with only two balls left in the innings. However, he was caught at long-on. With this, the right-arm pacer completed his second hat trick in the shortest format. 12 years, Southee took his maiden hat trick in the format against Pakistan in Auckland. Also, he has become the second bowler to take two hat-tricks in T20I cricket.

Before him, former Sri Lanka cricketer, Lasith Malinga took two hat tricks. Notably, one of them came against New Zealand in 2019.

Talking about the game, India was asked to bat first and they amassed 191/6. They would have reached 200 runs if not for Southee’s hat trick. Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav‘s second T20I hundred ensured the team reached the total after managing just 119 runs in 15 overs. In reply, the home team is likely to lose the game as they have only scored 104/6 in 16.3 overs. They need 88 runs in 21 balls which is almost impossible.

After the 20-20 World Cup 2022 semifinal drubbing, the Men In Blue are looking set to win. However, the team made some notable blunders in the game. They continued to ignore Sanju Samson for out of form Rishabh Pant. The latter failed to repay his team management’s faith as he could only manage six runs. Also, they are still showing faith in Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has looked out of touched in the past few months. Fans demanded Umran Malik could have played the game.
