Watch: Wales keeper Wayne Hennessey makes nasty challenge against Iran player, gets the first Red card at FIFA World Cup 2022
The FIFA World Cup 2022 has been an incredibly successful affair so far with many upsets brought to fruition in just five days of football. On 6th day, Wales and Iran clashed in a Group B match on Friday.
Wales were coming off a feisty 1-1 draw against the USA whereas Iran had faced a massive thumping of 6-2 by the hands of England. Many expected Wales to outclass Iran and move top of the table with four points. However, this World Cup has already shown that results don’t often go as expected.
The scoreline at the end of the match was 2-0 in Iran’s favour and now it is them who sit second in Group B while Wales have slid down to the bottom. While the game was a highly exciting affair throughout, one moment that defined the result of the match came in the second half.
In the 86th minute, Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey ran out of his box to clear a ball that was played by an Iran player and in the process ended up kicking the Iranian forward.

As a process the Wales goalkeeper was given a red card for a foul challenge; a challenge deemed to be career-ending if it landed on an Iran player’s head.
As a result of this red, Wayne Hennessey became the first player to be handed a red card at the FIFA World Cup 2022. He also became only the third goalkeeper ever to receive a red card in the football World Cup.
As for the game, it was a feisty tussle between the two teams in which Iran came out on top eventually due to their goalkeeper being sent out of the match.
