After falling to Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2023 on Sunday, India’s wait for their first major trophy since 2013 was extended. At The Oval London, Rohit Sharma & Co. suffered a 209-run defeat after failing to reach their massive 444-run target. In four years, India had lost the WTC Final twice in a row. They fell short of New Zealand in the opening match in Southampton by an 8-wicket margin in 2021. Australia, on the other hand, claimed the coveted mace and made cricket history by becoming the first side to win every major trophy. Here are five reasons why India lost to Australia.

Wrong reading of conditions leading to wrong decision at toss

India chose to put Australia in to bat first after winning the toss because of the cloudy weather and grassy track. Unfortunately, they were unable to honour their choice. The game was gradually taken away from India’s control on the first day due to the incorrect length of the ball and excessive room provided to the opposing batsmen. Even the team’s head coach, Rahul Dravid, acknowledged that his bowlers were unable to execute the actual game plan, and the squad ultimately paid a high price on the final day of play. Overall, two WTC Finals have been completed, and India lost both of them due to poor condition reading.
