Reports claim Hardik Pandya to lead Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024, which would mean the end of the Rohit era in MI. The highly successful IPL side took to their social media handle to announce the big decision. In their statement, MI mentioned about the transition phase they want to have going forward. MI will now be without their regular captain, Rohit, who led them for over 10 seasons.

Last month, MI announced the trade between them and Gujarat Titans regarding the exchange of Hardik Pandya at the cost of INR 15 crores. Back then, everyone doubted the move of MI. The 5-time champions have now made it clear why they went so hard behind Hardik in the trade. The former champions confirmed that Hardik would lead them in IPL 2024 and beyond. The fans are divided over the decision of MI.

That would mean that MI will not be playing under the leadership of Rohit, who helped them not just win their maiden title, but better that by winning a record 5 titles in the history of the league. Under Rohit, MI won the IPL in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. But Rohit is currently 36 years old. By the end of April, he would be well over 37. MI probably needed to find a captain for themselves.

Speaking about the transition in leadership, Mahela Jayewardene said that MI has been known for building a legacy and staying true to its philosophy. The Global Head of Performance of Mumbai Indians mentioned all the captains in the past and revealed the change in the captaincy of MI. “It is part of legacy building and staying true to the MI philosophy of being future-ready,” said Mahela.

“Mumbai Indians have always been blessed with exceptional leadership right from Sachin to Harbhajan and Ricky to Rohit, who while contributing to the immediate success have always had an eye on strengthening the team for the future. It is in keeping with this philosophy that Hardik Pandya will assume captaincy of Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season,” said Jayawardene.
