Harbhajan slams Inzamam-ul-Haq

In recent weeks, former Indian cricketers such as Virender Sehwag and Irfan Pathan have openly expressed their criticism of the performance of the Pakistan cricket team in the ODI World Cup. Pakistan faced an early exit in the group stage of the 2023 World Cup, securing the fifth position with four victories in nine matches. While the critiques primarily focused on Pakistan’s on-field performance, a resurfaced video featuring Inzamam-ul-Haq sparked outrage in India on Tuesday. This led Harbhajan Singh to share a strongly-worded tweet against the former Pakistan captain.

The video in question features the legendary former Pakistan batter asserting that Harbhajan Singh, along with other Indian cricketers, used to attend sermons by Maulana Tariq Jameel, known for leading prayers with the Pakistan cricket team. In the video, Inzamam revealed that during a tour, he extended invitations to Irfan Pathan, Zaheer Khan, and Mohammad Kaif to join the prayer sessions, claiming that Harbhajan also participated in the preaching. The former Pakistan skipper went on to suggest that the former Indian spinner was influenced by these sermons and even expressed a desire to convert.

“Maulana Tariq Jameel used to visit us every day. We had a room for Namaz. Following the prayers, he would talk to us. After a day or two, we invited Irfan Pathan, Zaheer Khan, and Mohammad Kaif for prayers. I noticed that 2-3 more Indian players also used to join; they won’t say the prayers but used to listen to the Maulana,” Inzamam said in the video.

“Harbhajan once told me, ‘My heart says that I should agree to whatever he (Maulana) says’. I said, ‘Then follow him. What is stopping you?’ Then, he replied, ‘I see you and then I stop. Your life isn’t like that. So, it is us who are not following our religion. We are to be blamed,” he further said.

The legendary India spinner was then quick to respond to these claims and took to Twitter to express his displeasure. In a rather explosive tweet, Harbhajan wrote, “Yeh kon sa nasha pee kar baat kar raha hai? I am a proud Indian and proud Sikh..yeh Bakwaas log kuch bi bake hai (What was he drinking before speaking such nonsense? I am a proud Indian and a proud Sikh)

The former India spinner had undertaken numerous tours to Pakistan with the Indian cricket team and maintains a cordial relationship with Shoaib Akhtar, the former fast bowler of the Pakistani side. Earlier this year, the two appeared in a delightful video during the Legends League Cricket, reminiscing about memorable moments from their past encounters. Inzamam-ul-Haq, on the other hand, recently resigned from his position as Pakistan’s chief selector in the aftermath of the team’s disappointing performance in the 2023 World Cup. The Pakistan squad returned home earlier this week after concluding their campaign.
