West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews played a blinder against Australia in the second T20I in Sydney. Coming off a big win against the visitors, the Aussies batted first after losing the toss. They lost two wickets for seven runs. The likes of Beth Mooney (29) and Ellyse Perry put together 70 runs. After the wicket of the former, Ashleigh Gardner (2) went cheaply too and the team was reduced to 87/4.

Perry amassed 70 off 46 balls before getting out to Shamilia Connell. At 120/5, the likes of Phoebe Litchfield (52*), Annabel Sutherland (13), and Georgia Wareham (32*) helped the team reach 212/5. In reply, the 2016 T20 World Cup winners lost the wicket of Shabika Gajnabi (1) early. The likes of Matthews and Stefanie Taylor (59) put together 174 runs in just 15.4 overs. With the former getting 132 off 44 balls including 20 fours and five sixes, the team reached the target easily with one ball to spare and seven wickets left.

I think I have learned more about my batting: Hayley Matthews

“I think I’ve learned more about myself and my batting. The areas I want to access. It’s been working really well for me. The leadership of the team has made me take a lot more responsibility. Last game we spoke about learning. We came in with the exact same team for that exact reason. Obviously the last game was a bit tough for us with the ball but we backed the bowlers to come back today and we saw from the start they were right on the mark.

We knew we had to go pretty hard early on with the bat. Batting with Stafanie helps a lot and I think she really got into her groove today. To chase down over 200 is something we’ve never been able to do let alone against the best team in the world. I’m incredibly proud of this squad and hopefully we can keep moving forward,” the West Indies skipper said after being rewarded as the Player of the Match.
