20-20 World Cup 2022 – England vs New Zealand: Top 10 Memes from the game
England and New Zealand locked horns in the Super 12 round of the ongoing 20-20 World Cup 2022 at the Gabba. It was a must-win game, especially for the Three Lions, as they had only one to their name after three games. They had won one game, lost as many, and their game against Australia was washed out. On the other hand, the Blackcaps needed to win to solidify their place in the semis.
After winning the toss, the 2010 winners decided to bat first. They had a great start as skipper Jos Buttler and Alex Hales put together 81 runs. The former scored 52 off 40 balls while the skipper scored 73 off 47 balls. Apart from the duo, only Liam Livingstone (20) reached the double-digit mark. At one stage, it looked like the team would easily cross the 190-run mark.
However, the 2021 finalists bowled well in the last few overs to restrict their opposition to 179/6 in the end.
England’s win means Australia’s semis qualification scenario becomes more difficult
In reply, the Kiwis lost their openers, Finn Allen and Devon Conway inside the first five overs. At 28/2, skipper Kane Williamson and last match’s centurion, Glenn Phillips put together 89 runs for the third wicket. During the partnership, the former could only score run-a-ball 40 which didn’t help the team’s case in the end. After his wicket, the team lost three wickets in the space of 16 runs including the one of Phillips.
This meant that the required rate kept creeping up and eventually, the Kane Williamson-led side lost by 20 runs. With this win, the Red Brigade has kept its semis hopes alive. Also, they have a healthy Net Run Rate (NRR) of (+0.547). On the other hand, for the Kiwis, thanks to their massive wins against Australia and Sri Lanka, their NRR is (+2.233). Talking about the defending champions and hosts Australia, their NRR was dented massively after losing to NZ and winning by only 40 runs against Ireland. Their NRR is (-0.304) and they need to win massively against Afghanistan to qualify.
