‘200+ is normal nowadays’ – Fans react as Durban Super Giants overcome Sunrisers Eastern Cape by 35 runs in SA20 2024
Durban Super Giants (DSG) overcame the challenge of Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the ongoing SA20 2024. A collective team effort meant that DSG won their second match of the SA20 2024. Durban dominated the game against the defending champions and did not let them be in the game for most parts. It was a good performance with the bat by DSG that kept Sunrisers out of the game from the beginning.
Batting first, DSG had a good opening partnership. Quinton De Kock and Matthew Breetzke posted 58 runs for the opening wicket. The efforts of the duo were carried on later by the middle-order duo of JJ Smuts and Nicholas Pooran. The duo batted well and took calculative measures against the bowlers. It meant that DSG were safe in the middle.
While Pooran took a bit of his time to score runs, Smuts was all over the bowlers. The right-handed batter scored 75 runs in 38 balls. his knock included 7 sixes and 4 fours. Pooran on the other hand scored 60 runs in 31 balls. The Southpaw hit 4 gigantic sixes and 5 fours. The duo ensured that DSG posted a mammoth total of 225 runs on the board, which was not easy to chase on that wicket.
Tom Abell and Tristan Stubbs’ efforts go in vain
Chasing the target, DSG got the early wickets, and the duo of Reece Topley and Gleeson claimed the wickets of the openers and put pressure on Sunrisers. The chasing side never really recovered from the early blow. They took a lot of time than needed to get going in the middle. Tom Abell tried his best to get the side back in the game. Aiden Markram could not get going early on.
When the skipper was dismissed, it seemed like the match was done and dusted. But Tristan Stubbs gave it a try and nearly got them close to the required equation. While Abell scored 65 runs in 36 balls, Stubbs scored 55 runs in 26 balls. However, a good bowling from the opening duo of Gleeson and Topley, and a tidy little spell from Maharaj and Pretorius ensured the second win of the season for DSG.
