Umesh Yadav has been one of the mainstays in Indian cricket for a long time. In the golden generation of the Indian pace attack, Umesh has played a key role as a supporting pace. Particularly in home conditions, Umesh has proved his worth as a lethal bowler. If he can pull off the same even remotely close in away conditions, he can be a threatening bowler. However given his age, Umesh has not been considered in recent times by the Indian management. Yadav could not find a place in the series against West Indies and South Africa in Test cricket.

However, if Shami is likely to be injured, he might still be the pacer in the race to be picked as a replacement. Though he is 35 years old and does not bowl at over 140 kmph anymore, he can swing the ball away from the right-handers and seam it into the right-handers. The conditions in SA suit his bowling style. Umesh can be good if he can get his line and lengths right. His wayward bowling has been a big concern for the Indian management, which was one of the primary reasons for him getting dropped after the WTC final against Australia.
